COUNSELLING CELL

"Counselling is the gentle art of walking alongside someone as they discover their own inner strength and resilience."

At Xavier University Patna, we recognize the significance of holistic development and mental well-being alongside academic success. Our dynamic Counselling Cell is committed to creating a supportive environment where students can flourish both personally and academically. Here's an overview of our vision, mission, objectives, and activities:

Our Vision
To empower students to handle life's challenges with resilience, empathy, and confidence.
Our Mission
To provide confidential, compassionate counselling services to support personal growth & well-being.
Our Objectives
Supportive Environment: Establish a safe and welcoming space where students feel comfortable discussing their concerns, challenges, and aspirations.
Personal Development: Help students enhance self-awareness, coping strategies, and interpersonal skills to effectively navigate various life transitions.
Promoting Mental Health: Increase awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and encourage a culture of self-care and help-seeking within the Xavier University Patna community.
Crisis Intervention: Provide timely and responsive support to students in crises, emergencies, or distressing situations.
Collaborative Partnerships: Work with faculty, staff, and external resources to deliver comprehensive support and referrals as needed.
Skill-building Workshops: Conduct workshops, seminars, and group sessions on stress management, mindfulness, resilience, and communication skills.
Community Outreach: Engage in outreach activities to connect with students, raise mental health awareness, and promote a supportive campus culture.
Continuous Improvement: Regularly assess and evaluate our services to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our diverse student population effectively.
Our Key Activities
Individual Counselling: A primary task of the University counsellor is to provide individual counselling sessions to students. This involves one-on-one meetings to address a wide range of issues.
Assessment and Evaluation: Students’ needs, strengths, and areas of concern are identified through intake interviews, psychological assessments, and ongoing evaluations. This process enables the Counsellor to tailor interventions to individual circumstances. When necessary, they collaborate with professionals such as psychologists or psychiatrists to ensure a comprehensive approach to assessment and treatment, particularly in complex cases.
Crisis Intervention: In times of crisis or emergencies, the Counsellor provides immediate support and intervention. This includes responding to situations such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, substance abuse, or traumatic events on campus.
Advocacy and Referral: The Counsellor serves as a student advocate, ensuring their needs and rights are supported within the Xavier University Patna community. They also act as a bridge to other campus services—such as faculty, advisors, health services, and student support teams—and facilitate referrals to external agencies, hospitals, or counselling centres for specialized or long-term care.
Psychoeducation and Workshops: Workshops, seminars, and psychoeducational programs are organized to enhance students’ personal and interpersonal skills while promoting well-being. Topics include stress management, mindfulness, communication skills, resilience, healthy relationships, and self-care. Through these initiatives, students gain practical tools to manage challenges effectively and thrive both academically and personally.
Consultation and Collaboration: The Counsellor works closely with faculty, staff, administrators, and stakeholders to cultivate a supportive campus culture. They provide guidance on student behaviour, mental health policies, crisis response protocols, and broader initiatives to strengthen wellness and inclusion.
Prevention and Outreach: Proactive initiatives—such as awareness campaigns, events, and outreach programs—are designed to reduce stigma, promote positive coping skills, and encourage help-seeking behaviour. The Counsellor also engages with student organizations and orientation programs to extend resources and support across the student body.
